Another Job: Disability Without Poverty
Hello everyone, and Happy Mothers day to all the incredible moms, out there; especially mine!
My mom, sister, aunt, cousin and her little baby boy spent the weekend at what British Columbians and Albertians call the “Castle in the Rockies- Banff Springs Hotel!” I know! We are very lucky! For the past couple years before COVID, it had become a tradition for us to stay there for Mother’s Day, and we were so excited to continue it! It is such a special time for all of us to get together, and in such a spectacularly beautiful, historic castle! Always lots of laughs and lots of special memories made together! I hope your Mothers Day was just as wonderful! Moms are the best!
Anyway, I actually wanted to share another new adventure I’ve started recently. I have gotten myself another job!
Yep! Another one! The opportunities just keep coming! When I was younger I used to worry so much about getting a job, and what I would do after highschool. I don’t know what I was so worried about! Jobs keep coming, and now I have to be careful that I am not too much in over my head with them! I’m a busy girl!
I have to give credit to the organization, Inclusion BC, of which I am the Vice President of, for generating all these opportunities for me. It’s amazing how many doors they have opened for me!
My latest job opportunity is working as an Administrative Assistant for an organization called “Disability Without Poverty(DWP) '' DWP, a national organization that is led by people who have diverse abilities and families of people who have diverse abilities. It is an organization that is trying to raise the monthly income for people who have diverse abilities, which currently is not an amount that we can live off of, especially with the rising prices of everything these days, and with the extra, expensive equipment some of us need to be able to live our lives safely and successfully.
I am very grateful to be even a small part of this organization. I didn’t think I would be working for a organization dealing with the financial side of anything; not this soon in my life, anyway, but here I am. I am very grateful to the DWP, and especially Amanda, my first contact person, who I had my initial interview with for considering me this job and for being so warm in welcoming me into DWP.
I hope to help DWP as much as I can, and, in doing that, I am asking you for your help. DWP is running a #BudgettheBenifit Campaign. They are putting pressure on the government to put the “Canada Disability Benifit” in place, which will provide financial assistance to people who have diverse abilities. This was promised to people with diverse abilities by Canadian Parliament three years ago, and nothing has been done about it. In the meantime, people who diverse abilities are facing major financial struggles. I am so grateful that I am still able to live with my family, but, like many 28 year olds, I would like to be able to live on my own, and be able to support myself. The Canada Disability Benefit being put into effect might make that a reality one day.
The #Budgetthebenefit campaign is a postcard campaign. DWP is sending pre-addressed and stamped postcards written to the Otttawa Parliament buildings , to act as voting ballots to push this bill forward and make the futures of people who have diverse abilities brighter, with more opportunities. If you would like to see this bill move forward, you can order postcards by emailing hello@disabilitywithoutpoverty with your name or name of your organization(if you have one), how many postcards you would like to receive , the language you would like them in(DWP can send ones in either English or French) and your mailing address.
Attached to this blog is a document with more information about the postcard campaign.
If you wish, we would love to chat with you about this. Email me at kateg@disabilitywithoutpoverty.ca, and I can set up a zoom chat with you, Amanda and I to discuss what the passing of this bill would mean to you! Help make the future of diverse abilities bright and prosperous! Thank you!
